For more information on nursing regarding the COVID-19 emergency response, see NCSBN. A license purchased in a compact state, which is not the legal home, is not recognized by other compact members, so nurses who legally reside in non-compact states must obtain licenses for each compact state in which they wish to practice. According to the NLC, Registered Nurses (RN) are required to comply with the laws of care practices in the state in which the patient is located (their „place of practice“) – and are subject to the privilege of practising in that state if deemed necessary. However, the RN`s state of origin remains responsible for any discipline against the nurse`s admission. The NLC was created by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and reflects an intergovernmental agreement that allows registered nurses (RNs) and licensed nurse practitioners/professionals (LPN/LVN) to hold a license. The license issued by her primary residence allows the nurse to practice in other compact states (physically and by technology) without obtaining an additional license. Several states have adopted emergency authorization measures. The NCSBN has compiled a list of emergency measures taken by each state to make it easier for nurses to use their current license to help in areas where they are most needed. The document contains the following information, What does this mean for nurses? Nurses currently practising in states where the legislation is still pending have nothing to do until the bill is passed. Once the state is part of the eNLC, the state board of directors will reach all nurses registered with the state. Nurses must then ensure that their permanent address is up to date with the state board to determine the compact license. Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) is an agreement that allows mutual recognition (reciprocity) of a care license between U.S. member states („compact states“).
The NLC, introduced into law by participating states, allows a nurse legally residing in a compact state (her „state of origin“) and licensed to practice in one of the other compact states (the „remote states“) without obtaining an additional license in remote states.
